The Factory Window: Turning Empty Space into a Platform

If you’ve walked past our Linthorpe Road building (formerly H Samuel jewellers), you’ll know one thing - there’s a lot of window space!

And rather than let it sit empty while we await renovation, we’ve turned it into a public gallery.

The first artist to take over The Factory Window is Charly Mupenga, an impressionist painter and muralist originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, now based here in Teesside.

“Charly’s work is deeply rooted in his personal experiences and the raw political and social realities of his homeland. His art is a bold act of witness—bringing to life the conflicts, injustices, and vulnerability faced by those living in the DRC. Through his vivid canvases, Charly gives voice to the collective memory and individual struggles of his people.

Renowned for his emotional and captivating portraits, Charly’s work focuses on the untold stories of the marginalised children with penetrating gazes, women carrying silent histories, and entire communities on the fringes. Every piece invites you to witness the untold narratives of resilience, strength, and humanity.”

The exhibition runs until Saturday 6th February, open Thursday–Saturday, 9am–4pm at No.46 Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough.
